When is the best time to kayak the Apostle Islands?

June through August are the best months for kayaking the sea caves.

Summer offers the calmest waters and most predictable marine weather. Even in summer, you must use a 16-foot sea kayak with sealed bulkheads. Sudden squalls can occur, making the sea caves hazardous in rough seas.

How cold is the water in spring and early summer?

Average water temperatures in May and June remain in the 40s (Fahrenheit).

Paddling during these months requires a wetsuit or drysuit. The cold water creates dangerous conditions if you capsize. Many visitors prefer taking the Apostle Islands Cruise Service from Bayfield during this colder period.

How often do the winter ice caves open?

The mainland ice caves are extremely rare.

Between 2000 and 2023, historical access to the mainland ice caves occurred on only 2% of days. The caves only open when Lake Superior freezes solid enough for safe walking. When they do open, you cannot park directly at the Meyers Beach trailhead. Visitors must take off-site shuttles.

When does the park stay open?

Apostle Islands National Lakeshore is open year-round.

While the Bayfield headquarters and the mainland trails remain open all year, water access stops in late fall. Strong winds and rough seas make kayaking unsafe outside the summer window.

Apostle Islands accessibility by season

Access depends heavily on the month and Lake Superior's marine forecast.

Review typical conditions before you plan your drive to Bayfield or Meyers Beach.
